Electric Guitar Custom Shop Common Jobs
Push/Pull Pots
What if with the push/pull of a button, you could totally change your tone. You can! Here are some of the most common push/pull potentiometer upgrades we can do.
Split Coil - push the pot to engage the humbuckers, pull only use one coil of the humbucker and get a single coil sound
Two Cap / Two Tone - we can add two capacitors to your potentiometer so you can push to get a brighter sound and pull to get a warmer — give you twice the tonal control you had before
Phase Reversal - this mod allows you to reverse the phase of the pickup to get totally new sounds. This is truly getting the most out of your pickup
Engage/Disengage Volume - There is no way around it — the volume changes the sound. There are two ways around this, get rid of the volume pot when you want the pure sound of our pickups, or install a push/pull pot that allows you to bypass volume with the pull of a button, and then go back to normal by pushing down. (We can do the same with the tone switch, as well)
Bright Switch - Want a little more for those solos or when the volume is up to “11”? Install a bright switch and go full throttle when you need to. This mod removes the ground when engaged and sounds a little more hi-fi.
Neck Bridge On - Wondered if there is a way to play your neck and bridge pickup together on a Strat or other 3-pickup guitar? This mod allows you to pull the knob and turn your neck pickup on regardless of where the switch is turned giving you new sonic possibilities
More Tone Please
We can give you total control over your tone with custom mods on your electronics.
Install New Pots - sometimes, a simple change in the pots is all you need to get the tone you want. You can install no-load pots or you can change the pots to 250k, 300k, 500k resistance, etc.
Install a Treble Bleed - wondering why the treble seems to die when your volume is turned down? Install a treble bleed mod and sound just as good on 2 as you do on 10
Bass Cut Tone Knob - the opposite of the treble bleed - sort of. This mod cuts the lows coming through your signal.
Install a Kill Switch (momentarily or off/on) - whether you just want to cut sound between songs or want to Tom Morello that thing — kill switches open up new possibilities and serve a very practical purpose at the same time
Blender Mods - this mod can be done a few different ways. Mostly, it is to control how much of the pickup is engaged. By rolling the knob, you are rolling how much output is coming. You can also use this as a sort of “switch” to blend between pickups. So you could be 60% bridge pickup, for example, and 40% neck.
Onboard Effects
The idea is quite simple - take the best analog vintage effects, miniturize them, and put them IN your guitar. You activate with a switch, push/pull pot, or new pot.
Onboard Distortion - turn on overdrive at the flip of a switch on your guitar, no pedal required. Can createa vintage tweed, modern overdrive tweed, vintage British, or Modern Metal British overdrive.
Onboard Analog Delay - a minitiature tape delay available with the flip of the switch, and ability to change the speed of the delay without ever having to bend over and turn a pedal knob.
Onboard Optical Analog Compressor - classic compressor built directly in your guitar. You can control sustain and speed the compressor kicks in. Make your picking cut through and keep your chords from clipping.
Onboard Analog Vintage Chorus - need I say more?
Onboard Vintage Wah-Wah - classic envelope filter inside your guitar to give something extra funky to your playing
Onboard Midrange Boost - looking for that classic Clapton sound? Find it with the push of a switch on your guitar to boost those mids
Onboard Tremolo - we have optical and analog options
Onboard Preamps
Similar to Onboard Pedal Effects, preamps give you more tone control by providing amp like sounds, and unlike the pedal effects, require a battery.
Active preamp/EQ Board - turn your guitar into a tone machine by installing an EQ board easily adjusted with an existing volume or tone knob (or install new knob)
Volume/Boost/Tone Preamp - this specifically replaces Strat-like set-ups with volume and tone controls that turn your passive setup into a fully active tone machine
Pre-Wired Active/Passive True Bypass Push/Pull - one of my favorite mods as it keeps everything you love about your guitar accessible, but adds the option to go active (Volume, Boost, Tone PreAmp) by just pushing or pulling the knob
Gain/EQ Amp Driver - this is not a distortion effect, but a switchable circuit that has three settings: bright and punchy, warm mid overdrive, hot tube overdrive. Just pull the knob up to go back to stock guitar sound.
Onboard Preamps Continued…
SRV style Onboard Driver - onboard preamp that gives you 3 different tonal dimensions that excite Steve Ray Vaughn vibes: classic tube boost, fat bottom boost, and a overall 3-EQ boost. Just pull the knob up to go back to stock guitar sound.
Hotrodded Boost - five classic sounds hidden inside your guitar. Preamp that offers five different drives and boosts: Clean Boost, Crunchy AC-30, Overdrive Twin, Marshall Lead, Megaoverdrive. Crazy versatile mod and just pull the knob to go back to stock guitar sound.
Mid Boost Circuit - onboard circuit that can fatten any tone and gets classic Clapton-like sound (think Cream): bass boost, low-high mid boost, and scooped mids. Total tonal control that is epic on fattening single coil pickups.
Dual Boost/Frequency Expander - two small switches installed on pickguard (or elsewhere). One switch is an off/on to go between stock sound and new sound. Other is the option of Mid/Gain Boost and Freqency Expander
Super Strat Setups and Custom Pickguards
Super Strat - The super strat takes away the five-way switch and installs three 3-way switches to provide an infinite possibility of sound. The concept is pretty simple- Each mini switch has three positions- You wire up your strat pickups so that each pickup is independently assignable as "IN PHASE", "OUT OF PHASE" and "OFF". This allows you to get all of the standard strat sounds, plus all of the in Phase sounds, plus the ability to kick any pickup out-of-phase with the other pickups. The result is a guitar with 13 individual sounds.
Custom Pickguards - feel comfortable with guitar setup but don’t want to touch wiring? Let us build you a custom pickguard in which you just have to install the pickguard and connect one wire. Rather than list the options, it is better to set up a consultation. We can do this online and ship the pickguard to you. The options are limitless: pickup selections, hardware, knob, switch, selection, electronics selection, onboard effect/preamps, wiring mods, and of course — the pickguard!
Red Special Setup - This setup is designed to mimic that guitar wiring that Brian May from Queen used. This can be used with any 3-pickup guitar, but also recommend using pickups similar to those he used if you want the true sound. Includes a tone and volume knob plus 6 dip switches for ultimate tonal control.
The “She’s All That” Total Makeover
We take a base-level guitar, and swap out the electronics and hardware, set it up, to give you a one-of-a-kind guitar that sounds and looks exactly like you want it to.
Squier to Strat/Tele/Jazzmaster
Epiphone to LP/SG
Gretsch
PRS SE
And more.
My favorite guitar is a Strat I redid. It was a black Squier with a white pickguard. I added a lace pickup, minibucker, and twang banger. Installed locking tuners, new tremolo bridge, new pickguard, new electronics with a custom capacitor for specific tone control, a treble bleed, and all black hardware. I dressed the frets, rounded the fretboard edges, and did a full setup.

Pedal Mods/Builds
The first guitar pedal I bought was a Boss DS-1 distortion pedal. I was so excited. I brought it home, and plugged it in, and got a tin-like gain from it. Now, my gear wasn’t the greatest, but even years later with a nice guitar, it just didn’t feel right.
Then I learned about the Keeley DS-1 mod, ordered my parts and never looked at stock pedals the same again.
There are tons of mods we can do to tons of pedals. Rather than list the mods, we decided to list just some of the pedals we can mod. If it is analog — we can mod it.
Check out our products page for custom built pedals.
